Songwriting: Catch A New Beginning

In March of 2020, I relocated from the bustling streets of New York City to the open space of the

Chesapeake Bay. Sheltering from COVID, I found solace in the quiet mystery hovering over the

salty water. Some mornings the fog was so thick I couldn’t see the other side of the bay.

It was in those quiet hours of cloudy isolation that I wrote a melody that felt as though it spoke

more clearly of my struggle than any words could. That small riff became the centerpiece of

"Catch A New Beginning."

As I worked to bring the song to life, I realized that the fog outside my window was both warning

me and calling me into the deep. I would sit on the dock alone for hours looking out on the

water, knowing that these moments of solitude were preparing and strengthening me to return to

my home in New York City.

And return I did, with a renewed sense of connection to my inner life and a clearer calling to dive

into the world.

This time of intentional solitude drove me to finish and record this song, hoping it would

empower others during their future moments of isolation to press through the solitude toward

clarity--and catch a new beginning.

Musically, the song begins with a sparse arrangement, painting a sonic picture of the singer in

her aloneness. The chorus expands to include new instruments and layers of vocals, moving

the singer into the fog. In the second verse, the momentum grows through additional

instrumentation as the singer closes their eyes to look within. The final chorus is layered with

textures that express the singer’s clarity of courage to begin anew.

I am grateful to my dear friend Lindsay Carron for this custom cover image that captures the

isolation and vulnerability of reaching into the void and learning to see through the cloudy fog

into the radiant and refracted beauty of clarified vision.
