Sonic Memorials: The Role of Songs in Civic Storytelling.

Soul of the Nation

“Soul of the Nation” was released in February 2022, but the song was still unfinished. It was the fusion of my voice with spoken word artist Spencer Aubrey that completed the song. Then, we won first place in the Be Still Media international art competition.

Our world is hurting. Each day brings new heartache, both near and far. And each day we learn human life is precious, fragile, and priceless. . . Humming to you are the cheerful tones of a banjo and guitar from my new song, “Human Life.” The song tells the story of Willow International. Willow rescues girls out of the sex trafficking industry in Uganda and provides a safe home for them. After a life of tragedy, these girls show a strength, joy, and love that inspires me to my core. Though “Human Life” is a celebration of these particular girls triumphing over the evil of sex trafficking, it is also about all of us. Because their hopes are our hopes. Their dreams, our dreams. And across the distance we come to recognize our own stories inside of their story.

"Wow, first off, this song is a banger! I find myself humming this song all day. A catchy tune with heartwarming lyrics, great music production and it all comes together in an exceptionally clean polished mix. This definitely sets the standard for future song submissions for Be Still.”
