Songwriting: Band Together

Hello Friend,

“Together” is a word that shows up regularly in songwriting. Within the eight letters lies a wealth of beauty, complexity, and courage. “Come Together,” “Let’s Stay Together,” and “Better Together” remind us to do the hard work of community building, affirming that togetherness is a place of love and life.

It is into this lineage of togetherness that I am delighted to release my newest single, “Band Together.” Sparked by the community building I did in New York and forged with the friendship of my co-writer Jenn Bostic, “Band Together” gives voice to what so many of us learned over the past few years:

We’re not made to walk crowded streets alone

People we pass aren’t mere stepping stones

We’ve been told to get there fast

But once we reach the top, we realize first place never lasts

If you are just joining the journey, “Band Together” is the second single in my generational leadership release sequence. Sparked by the vision and values of Alder, “Soul of the Nation” and “Band Together” bring the values of growth, sense-making, and community to life. It was an exciting, creative challenge to embed the essence of a non-profit in song, but when a company is soulful, it can be done. Along with the values of Alder, this beautiful passage from the Qur’an guided me toward the concept of banding together as well as the lyric in the bridge that speaks to happiness and joy.

“Let there arise out of you

A band of people

Inviting to all that is good,

Enjoining what is right,

And forbidding what is wrong:

They are the ones

To attain felicity.”

- S. III. 104-109 Qur’an

As “Band Together” moves through the world, I would greatly appreciate you banding together with me in spreading the word! And speaking of words, I created a lyric video for the song to give you an easy way to share it with all your friends!
